Upcycling Process
Overall, this project imagines an alternative design system of producing ‘new’ garments through sustainable practice (ie. ‘upcycling’) while highlighting the importance of the subjective element: that people wear their clothes because of their aesthetic appeal. ‘Spectra’ seeks to prevent textile waste of mass-production by redesigning the surfaces of second-hand clothing to reintroduce the materials into circulation. The surfaces are redesigned through printing and dyeing methods, applying artwork which visualise abstract shapes of soundwaves combined with spiritual symbols. Sourced samples including t-shirts and jeans are chosen for their material quality and likelihood of being disposed. T-shirts with kitsch graphics are chosen for ironic effect as they juxtapose with artwork inspired by obscure supertitious belief.
